System 7 does not include native e-commerce functionality such as online shopping carts and online payment systems because it is widely available from other suppliers. However System 7 is increasingly being used by customers to create profitable online shopping centres.

Such customers typically start by creating special shopping channels on their publications, and creating new types of content such as "product article" to fill them with. Both the shopping channels and special articles are created in the normal way, which requires no additional training and great flexibility.

Somewhere within shopping articles editorial simply inserts a "Purchase Now" link or button. These link either directly to an online payments provider such as WorldPay, if the publisher is going to fulfill the order themsevles, or to an affiliate shopping partner.

The advantage of this method is that the sale of products is integrated directly into online publications, users can find products using the standard site facility and product pages are spidered by search engines.
