System 7 Platform
Intelligent multi-platform digital publishing
| System 7 Platform In A Nutshell / FAQ |

|
Publishers are increasingly seeking to evolve from simple print focused operations to
multi-platform media companies. As part of this process, they must rapidly build-out
their digital publishing operations while generating a return on investment,
and also address long-term issues about the cross media compatibility of their content.
System 7 Platform can be used both as a rapid development environment for new digital publications, and as
a rich technology solution that may be applied to address these wider challenges.
The platform consists of a number of integrated systems:
- System 7 CMS (Content Management System)
This is a system for creating Web-based stores of XML documents and media files. In addition to the usual work
flow features, System 7 CMS contains innovative features such as XML media bundling, which allows media files such as
images or PDF documents to be bundled and managed with XML documents, and advanced content categorization and tagging
systems. Furthermore, System 7 CMS is a virtualized system,
which means you can create as many "individual" content management stores as you require - for example for staff groups
within your organization, for freelancers, or even citizen journalists. At the point at which you wish to pursue
cross media publishing, System 7 CMS provides the perfect foundation for moving forward, and it can be easily integrated with existing
legacy and external systems. more >
- System 7 PMS (Publication Management System)
The System 7 Publication Management System encapsulates the process of building and managing a site. Once a publisher
has accumulated content inside System 7 CMS, they can build new digital publications using the PMS control panels simply by defining
dynamic syndication channels - for example selecting categories of content from the different content stores that should
be used to build the channels of a new site.
Once content has been syndicated to create the bones of a site, the PMS can used to pin on a range of digital publishing
functionalities such as banner advertising, feature lists and slot boxes, which may be displayed by the publications
skin templates (written in Microsoft ASP.NET). The PMS provides control panels for the management of these features, together with advanced modules for
requirements such as traffic distribution analysis, search engine referral ROI calculation, pay-per-view (PPV) tariff
application and subscriber and subscriber group management. more >
- System 7 API / Rapid Site Development
The System 7 CMS is used to create and manage content in a cross media format. The System 7 PMS is then used to create
digital publications by selecting portions of that content according to a rich variety of categorization, tagging and other
rules, and by adding to the content digital publishing specific concepts such as banner advertising, feature lists and
slot boxes. Finally, a set of ASP.NET based skin template files generates the concrete HTML realization of the thus
defined publication which is experienced by site visitors in their Web browsers. Each ASP.NET template leverages
easy-to-use System 7 APIs and objects, which enable rapid site development while also allowing the developer to
harness the full power of the Microsoft ASP.NET system.
For ready-made online magazine and Web portal ASP.NET templates, which eliminate custom
programming, see System 7 Express >
